CaroMont Health contributes $45,000 towards lung cancer screening, for those people that fit the national lung cancer screening protocol criteria, $50 low radiation CT scans for screening are now available.

An estimated 224,210 new cases of lung cancer are expected in 2014, accounting for about 13% of all cancer diagnoses.

Lung cancer accounts for more deaths than any other cancer in both men and women. An estimated 159,260 deaths, accounting for about 27% of all cancer deaths, are expected to occur in 2014.

Cigarette smoking is by far the most important risk factor for lung cancer; risk increases with both quantity and duration of smoking.

In 2013, 199 cases of lung cancer were diagnosed at CaroMont Health. 70% of these cases were diagnosed in late stage disease (Stage III and IV). Data provided by CaroMont Health’s Cancer Registry

According to the Gaston County 2012 Community Health Assessment Report, the smoking rate for Gaston County is 25.2% while the state average is 21.8%.
