Charles Meakin, MD

After a long and fruitful career dedicated to helping those who needed it most, Charles J. Meakin, MD is retiring. As one of the SERO Group’s beloved physicians, he will be missed. Without a doubt, his career has been admirable, and we are thankful for the countless individuals and families he has helped during his time as a radiation oncologist.

Unparalleled Education

Dr. Charles Meakin originally hails from Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended St. Xavier High School. He then moved to Indiana and attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend. As a member of the Fighting Irish, he earned a B.A. in Economics while focusing on the pre-med track. Immediately after graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1981, Dr. Meakin earned his medical degree (M.D.) from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1985. In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Meakin also took night classes over a period of two years to earn his Master’s in Health and Administration (MHA). Post medical school, Dr. Meakin went on to complete his intern year at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, then completed his residency in radiation oncology at Stanford University Hospital in Stanford, California in 1989. He also completed individual rotations at Sloan Kettering Hosptial and Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, California.

A Storied Career

After finishing his training, Dr. Meakin went into practice. He spent his first couple of years in private practice at The Christ Hospital in his home city. Upon leaving The Christ Hospital, Dr. Meakin traveled to Santa Rosa, California where he worked for three years. In addition to his time in Santa Rosa, he also spent a year as the Medical Director for Sonoma County Hospice. Finally, he arrived in Gastonia, North Carolina where he worked as the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Dedication to Serving Others

Dr. Meakin decided to go into healthcare to help others. Throughout his storied career, Dr. Meakin maintained that he felt his best when he was helping someone, and he will likely continue to do so for years to come. Dr. Meakin will spend his retirement as he enjoyed his time as a SERO physician: with family members and friends enjoying nature with hiking, biking, kayaking and rock climbing.

Thank you, Dr. Meakin, for your dedication and service to not only the SERO Group but also all of the families and individuals you have served throughout your career. Your medical knowledge, compassion and warmth will be missed by all. We all wish you a long and happy retirement.
